East Hills Baptist Church

For about 2 years, from the ages of 15 to 17 years old, I attended East Hills Baptist Church located at 217 E. Birch St., Brea, CA. 92821. It is now called Brea Baptist Church, and looks extremely different than how it looked when I was a teenager. The pastors names were Mr. David Rader and Mr. Gary Drabek.

Next door was a small house that was converted into the teen Sunday School, when I attended.

There are 3 things I remember about attending this church.  "Lord, I Lift Your Name On High" was a song they sang almost every time I attended, that it is still in my brain in my 30s.  The song went something like this:

Lord, I lift your name on high.
Lord, I love to sing your praises.
I'm so glad you're in my life.
I'm so glad you came to save us.
You came from Heaven to Earth,

to show the way.
From the Earth to the Cross,
my debt to pay.
From the Cross to the Grave,
from the Grave to the sky.
Lord, I lift your name on high.

Another, was Pastor Rader's service and the church members were being fairly boring or lackluster.  He said something along the lines of, "You know, there was a Black woman in our group last week.  Remember her?  She was very vocal.  She said 'Amen' when she agreed with the sermon or Bible passages.  She sang loud with the music.  She felt the praises we were giving God.  She's not here this weekend, and that's a shame.  I want to hear you agree with God.  I want to hear you sing louder.  I want to know you feel the sermon.  It honestly makes me mad.  There's nothing wrong with being a fanatic.  A fanatic is a person who is a crazy fan of something.  Well I'm a crazy fan about God.  All of you should be, too!"

And the third thing I remembered from one of his speeches, something along the lines of, "You know, I've seen the snide looks and heard the whispers about some people not singing as great as you think they should.  But, they are up here singing their heart out to the Lord.  How dare you?"

Even though, I'm not practicing anymore, and of all the churches I'd visited in the past, I think I paid the most attention to Pastor Rader's sermons when I was a teenager.

Note:  This picture was taken from Google Maps.  I added a vignette and enhanced the color.

Most Holy Redeemer Church

My father and his siblings as well as his parents attended Most Holy Redeemer Church.  My father and some of his siblings attended the private Catholic School affiliated with the church called Holy Redeemer Catholic High School.

Per Wikipedia: Holy Redeemer High School was a Roman Catholic secondary school located in Southwest Detroit, at the corner of Junction and Vernor streets, near the Ambassador Bridge to Canada. It was operated by the Archdiocese of Detroit. It was founded in 1882 and closed in 2005 after 123 years. The buildings and grounds were converted into Detroit Cristo Rey High School which opened in 2008. The adjoining Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish and Holy Redeemer grade school both remain in operation. In 2002, the entire Parish grounds including the high school were recognized as part of the West Vernor-Junction Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and historic importance.

On Saturday, June 4, 2005, Holy Redeemer High School's farewell mass was held.

Antonura Arribas Arcala to Seattle

This is the passenger list to Seattle that my great-uncle Tony was on.  It listed him as 18 years old when he was on the S.S. President Jefferson.  He sailed from Manila, Philippines on October 21, 1923 to the port of Seattle, Washington, USA on November 13, 1923.  Upon arrival he would go to the Veteran Hospital in Tacoma, Washington.  His name was Antonura Arribas Arcala and he changed his name to Antonio Arribas Arcala.

Family Heritage

What is your ethnic background?
My mother is South Korean, for all that she knows. Her maiden last name of Cha that is connected back to the Yu Dynasty in China. My father's father was from the Philippine Islands, and was Ilocano heritage. My father's mother has a long history of French-Canadian in her ancestry that go back to France.

Where is your mom’s family from? Where is your dad’s family from?
My mother's mother was from South Korea. My mother's father was most-likely Korean. My mother said she was not sure, because he carried a Chinese surname and spoke fluent Japanese. My dad's mother was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. My dad's father was born and raised in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines.

Have you ever been there? What was that experience like?
I have only been to Detroit. I went in 2000. When I went to Detroit, the neighborhood had potential to be a booming and beautiful area, with beautiful brick buildings. However, each of those beautiful buildings were remnants and ruins of the Detroit riots of 1967. They were boarded up and windows were broken out. There were weeds everywhere, trash on the street, and prostitutes, pimps, homeless and drug dealers in plain view.

What traditions have been passed down in your family?
The only traditions I can think of is dressing up for Halloween and trick-or-treating; Santa Claus for Christmas, and hunting for colored eggs at Easter.

Who were your favorite relatives?
My favorite relative would have been my great uncle Tony. His was born as Antonura Arribas Arcala. When he came to the United States he changed his name to Antonio Arribas Arcala. Uncle Tony was there for my birth and many of my birthdays and Christmases. He had a very thick Ilocano accent, was very short, probably about 5'4". He was very talkative and very funny. He was the grandfather I never had.

My other favorite relative would have been my dad's younger sister, Jacki. She was very good about bringing the family together and cooking for all her relatives. She was also one of my closest relatives as she lived in the same city, Long Beach, CA when I was a young child.

Do you remember any of the stories they used to tell you?
I do not recall any stories at the moment.

What are the classic family stories? Jokes? Songs?
None that I can think of at this moment.

Raising Children

When did you first find out that you’d be a parent? How did you feel?
I found out on May 12, 1996. It was Mother's Day. I was scared. My mother's 56th birthday was on May 13th, and I did not want to ruin it, nor did I want to ruin her Mother's Day. I waited to May 14th to tell my parents. I was only 18, scared, but I was ready to take the title, "Mom."

Can you describe the moment when you saw your child for the first time?
The first time I saw my daughter, I thought she was so pretty. I didn't cry like other mother's do. When they first handed her over to me, she was naked, and I asked them to clean her first. They gave her back to me with a blanket and she was perfect.

How has being a parent changed you?
Before I had children, my life a bit more carefree. I smoked cigarettes and becoming a parent, I decide that was not what I wanted. I was into partying and hanging out, but as a parent, I was into staying home and relaxing with my baby.

What are your dreams for your children?
I hope my children have long lives. I want them to have successful careers. I want them to be happy. I want them to travel and I want them to be better than I ever was or could be. I wish I could have more children, but I am excited about being a grandparent in the next 10 to 15 years.

Do you remember when your last child left home for good?
N/A

Do you have any favorite stories about your kids?
To be written.

Mamerto Arcala's Migration to America

My father's father was Mamerto Agan Arcala.  He arrived in the United States via the S.S. President McKinley to the port at Seattle, Washington, USA from a port in Manila, Philippines.  The document erroneously spells his name as Momerto Arcola and also mis-dates his birthday as April 6, 1908.  His actual birthday was May 10, 1908.  He was 18 years old on arrival, on May 11, 1926, meaning he was still 17 when he boarded ship.  He stayed at the Tacoma Hotel in Tacoma, Washington with his brother Hilarion Arcala, whom was later known as Pedro "Pete" Arcala.

Richard the Fearless

Courtesy of Wikipedia.
He was born to William I of Normandy, princeps or ruler of Normandy, and Sprota. He was also the grandson of the famous Rollo. He was about 10 years old when his father was killed on 17 December 942. His mother was a Breton concubine captured in war and bound to William by a Danish marriage. William was told of the birth of a son after the battle with Riouf and other Viking rebels, but his existence was kept secret until a few years later when William Longsword first met his son Richard. After kissing the boy and declaring him his heir, William sent Richard to be raised in Bayeux. After William was killed, Sprota became the wife of Esperleng, a wealthy miller; Rodulf of Ivry was their son and Richard's half-brother.
When his father died, Louis IV of France seized Normandy, installed the boy Richard in his father's office, then placed him in the care of the count of Ponthieu. The king then split the lands, giving lands in lower Normandy to Hugh the Great. Louis kept Richard in confinement at Lâon, but he escaped with the assistance of Osmond de Centville, Bernard de Senlis (who had been a companion of Rollo of Normandy), Ivo de Bellèsme, and Bernard the Dane (ancestor of families of Harcourt and Beaumont).

In 946, Richard agreed to "commend" himself to Hugh, Count of Paris. He then allied himself with the Norman and Viking leaders, drove Louis out of Rouen, and took back Normandy by 947. In 962 Theobald I, Count of Blois attacked Rouen, Richard’s stronghold, but his army was defeated by the Normans and retreated never having crossed the Seine. Lothair king of the West Franks stepped in to prevent any further war between the two.

Afterwards, and until his death in 996, Richard concentrated on Normandy itself, and participated less in Frankish politics and petty wars. In lieu of building up the Norman Empire by expansion, he stabilized the realm, and united his followers into a cohesive and formidable principality.

Richard used marriage to build strong alliances . His marriage to Emma connected him to the Capet family. His wife Gunnor, from a rival Viking group in the Cotentin, formed an alliance to that group, while her sisters form the core group that was to provide loyal followers to him and his successors. His daughters provided valuable marriage alliances with powerful neighboring counts as well as to the king of England.
He also built on his relationship with the church, restoring their lands and insured the great monasteries flourished. His reign was marked by an extended period of peace and tranquility.

Jeri Arcala's Harvest Chicken Salad Recipe

From Jeri Arcala on a family discussion board at Geni.com, daughter of Thomas Arcala and Margaret Young: "Got this recipe from the "Pampered Chef". I usually have to double this recipe. This is always a big hit with potlucks and is usually the request I get."
HARVEST CHICKEN SALAD
Dressing:
2 oranges
1/3 cup fat-free mayonnaise
2 tablespoons stone-ground mustard
2 teaspoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 small garlic clove, minced
For the dressing, zest one orange to measure 2 teaspoons zest. Juice oranges to measure 1/2 cup juice. Combine orange zest, mayonnaise, mustard, sugar, salt, black pepper and garlic; whisk until smooth. While continuously whisking, add orange juice in a thin, steady stream; set dressing aside.
Salad:
1 package (6 ounces) fresh baby spinach leaves
2 cups diced roasted chicken
1 cup diced celery
2 medium Red Delicious apples
1/2 cup chopped red onion
3/4 cup sweetened dried cranberries
1/2 cup toasted pecan halves (optional)
2 peeled and cut into segments
Croutons (optional)
For the salad, place spinach in bottom of large serving bowl. Dice chicken and celery. Cut apples in half lengthwise; remove stems and seeds. Cut each apple half into four wedges; cut wedges into small pieces. Chop onion. Layer chicken, celery, apples, onions, cranberries and pecans, if desired, over spinach. Top with orange segments. Add croutons if desired. ***Serve immediately.
***Note: If you are not serving right away, squeeze some oranges so that the acid will help keep the apples from browning (I usually do this anyway whether I'm serving this right away or not). DO NOT put the dressing on the salad. Let people serve themselves with the dressing. This salad is so good that it doesn't really need the dressing, but it adds a little kick with the ground mustard seed in it. ENJOY!

Eleanor of Aquitane

Courtesy of Geni.com
In King John, Shakespeare portrayed Eleanor as a 'canker'd grandam', governed by lust for power, who schemed against her husband Henry II - a crime for which she spent fifteen years in prison - and dominated her children's lives, ruthlessly turning them against their father, the King. It is also well known that she feuded bitterly with at least one daughter-in-law and contributed to the death of her own grandson.

And, yet, there was another side to this powerful queen consort. Splendid in person, rank, and fortune, Queen of France - as the wife of Louis VII - and then of England, Eleanor of Aquitaine was worshipped by men, loved by her children, and idealised in the songs of the troubadours. She was renowned for her beauty and her generosity. Emerging at the King's death to become regent, she immediately ordered the release of prisoners throughout England, announcing: "By my own experience prisons are hateful to men and to be released from them is a most delightful refreshment to the spirit." She also patronised the great abbey at Fontevrault, a refuge for the wives of brutal husbands.

Today her glamour, her patronage of the poets, and her throwing off of the ferocious constraints with which convention shackled women in the twelfth century, are almost forgotten, as are her very real gifts as a politician and a ruler.
