Marie-Claude Damise

From Wikipedia (English):
The King's Daughters (French: filles du roi; filles du roy) is a term used to refer to the approximately 800 young French women who immigrated to New France between 1663 and 1673 as part of a program sponsored by Louis XIV. The program was designed to boost Canada's population both by encouraging male immigrants to settle there, and by promoting marriage, family formation and the birth of children. While women and girls certainly immigrated to New France both before and after this time period, they were not considered to be filles du roi, as the term refers to women and girls who were actively recruited by the government and whose travel to the colony was paid for by the king. They were also occasionally known as the King's Wards, where "wards" meant those under the guardianship of another.

Fresen Laurain

Fresen Laurain was my 3rd great-grandmother.  This is a picture of her tombstone.

Photo courtesy of Patricia Ibbotson at Findagrave.

She was born Euphrosine Leduc on October 31, 1825 and died November 28, 1908.  She was the daughter of François-Barthelemi Leduc and Marguerite Boutron dite Major.

Other names she was known by were Frazine and Mary Ann.

This is the census of 1850 in the township of Springwells, Wayne County, Michigan, USA.  Line 1 through 11 is Fresen's household.  On the same Census, on line 24 is Augustin Laurain's household.  Augustin and John Baptist Laurain were brother-in-laws and cousins.  John Baptist Laurain was the sibling of Marguerite Lorrain who was married to Augustin.  They were also cousins.
1850 Census - Springwells Township, Wayne County, Michigan.  Her name was written as Frazine.

From my 4th cousin 1x removed, Matt Laduke's website:
According to the published genealogy “Ancestry of William Leduc of Detroit, Michigan by His daughter Addie Leduc Morton
Francis Barthelmy and Marguerite lived at Saint-Timothee, Québec, Canada, but moved to Detroit, Michigan, leaving on October 31, 1834 and arriving in May 1835. They came with their six youngest children (Judith Angelique, Toussaint C, Louis, Michel, Josephine, Euphrosine) and the husband of their daughter Angelique, who had married Louis L’Arrive. They left on two sleighs with two teams, but when they got to York, now Kingston, Canada, the snow was gone, so they stopped there, and many of them worked there for awhile and then continued on their journey, arriving in Windsor, Canada, in early 1835. Their eldest daughter Marguerite, who had married Felix Charrbonneau, also came to Detroit soon after with his family to reside in Detroit. Their eldest son, Ambrose had married, and did not leave Canada. We do not know when or where Marguerite (Boutron) Leduc died but think while on a visit back to Canada. Francis Barthelmy Leduc made several visits back to Canada, and died there April 30, 1862, aged 79 years. He is buried at St. Louis, near St. Timothee, Canada.

Cha Surname

I really don't know much about my Korean side.  My mother has been very private and protective of her Korean family.  One thing she's always told me is that the Cha name, her maiden name, was related to the Yu family of Korea.  She said that Cha was Chinese in origin, without even researching her own name.

Being a "Cha" at school, she was teased.  Most children had the surnames Kim, Lee, Cho, Choi, or Pak (sometimes spelled in English as Park).  Cha was not only my mom's surname, but it was also the word for car (and other words with the word "cha" in it are truck and train).

While researching the origins of her maiden name, I found three articles online that coincides and confirms what my mother has said.

1.  From Ancestry.com:
Cha Name Meaning Korean (Ch’a): there is only one Chinese character for the Ch’a surname, and the Y{ou}nan Ch’a clan is the only clan. Their founding ancestor was Ch’a Hyoj{ou}n, son of Yu Ch’a-tal (10th century ad). Ch’a is a fairly common surname throughout the Korean peninsula, but most of the clan’s members live in Ky{ou}ngsang province, Hwanghae province, or P’y{ou}ngan province.Chinese : variant of Zha.

2.  From Cyclopedia.net:
Cha is an uncommon family name in Korea. The Yeonan Cha clan is the only clan. The founding ancestor was Cha Hyo-jeon, son of Yu Cha-dal (10th century AD). Most of the clan’s members live in Gyeongsang province, Hwanghae province, or P'yŏngan province. In South Korea in 2000, there were 180,589 people named Cha.

3.  From Wikipedia.org:
Cha is an uncommon family name in Korea. The Yeonan Cha clan is the only clan. The founding ancestor was Cha Hyo-jeon, son of Ryu Cha-dal (류차달) (10th century AD). Most of the clan’s members live in Gyeongsang province, Hwanghae province, or P'yŏngan province. In South Korea in 2000, there were 180,589 people named Cha.

From Wikipedia.org:
In Korea the genealogy book is called jokbo or chokbo. Each family has a jokbo which is passed down through generations, and copies are often printed and distributed among family members as necessary. The firstborn son of each family (in a form of primogeniture) inherits the original jokbo (as opposed to the copies) with him and continues the genealogy and family line. It was often used in pre-modern (i.e. post-Joseon period) Korea as proof of being of the yangban class. While many clans still maintain a jokbo, its function (which was very important, heavily relied-upon, and legally binding before the modern era) is largely relegated to clan record-keeping and other minor (i.e. not legally binding) social roles.

The JokBo Records were historically written with the Chinese character for the surname.  My grandfather who carried the Cha surname had all girls before he died.  My grandmother was pregnant with his last child when he passed.  That child was a boy.  To the best of our knowledge, no JokBo was received in my mom's family.  Perhaps, due to the fact her parents were not married to each other.

From KoreanGenealogy.org:
The HanJa (Chinese characters) for my mom's maiden name is:  車
The HanGul (Korean characters) for my mom's maiden name is:  차

Mamerto Arcala - Discrepancies

Mamerto "Jimmy" Agan Arcala
After further research on my grandfather, Mamerto Agan Arcala, son of Bartolome Arcala and Narcisa Arribas, I have found a 1940 Census record that lists him as Mamerto Arribas and that Pete Arcala was his step-brother.  This does prove that there are discrepancies in Mamerto's family tree.  First of all, his death records and his naturalization record documents his legal name as Mamerto Agan Arcala.  By tradition, Filipinos take on their mother's maiden name for their middle name.

Who was Agan?  Why did Mamerto use the surname Arribas instead of Arcala in the 1940 Census?  Was he not biologically an Arcala, but took on the Arcala surname to match his brothers?

If Mamerto was an Arcala, was Bartolome married to another person with the surname Agan, other than Narcisa?  Or was Mamerto the son of another Arribas, relative of Narcisa?

Personally, I have now seen and/or heard my grandfather's name in multiple ways:
  1. Mamerto Agan Arcala (Who is Agan?  Was that his biological mother's surname?)
  2. Mamerto Santiago Arcala (Santiago was his deceased brother in Washington, USA), hence how Mamerto got the nickname "Jimmy" for Santiago translates to Saint James, and Jimmy is the nickname for James.
  3. Mamerto Arribas (Was he named for Narcisa Arribas whom was the mother of Antonio Arribas Arcala and Pedro Arribas Arcala, or another relative by the same surname?) Mamerto did state his mother's name was Narcisa Arribas on his marriage application to my grandmother Lenore Evelyn Barron.  However, they also both lied on the marriage application about their ages.

His name is documented as Mamerto Agan Arcala on his Naturalization Record.

He lists Narcisa Arribas as his mother on his marriage certificate, which he lied about his age on.  My grandmother Lenore also lied about her age.

Mamerto's surname is Arribas on this 1940 Census and lists his brother Pete as his "step-brother."

  • Hilarion Arcala (aka Pedro) was married to Macaria Agosto Quibal on July 7, 1917 and his parents were listed as Bartolome Arcala and Narcisa Arribas.
  • Antonio Arcala was married to Gertrude Daudin (neé Lueckernan) and lists his parents as Bartolome Arcala and Narcisa Arribas.  The Social Security Death Index states his mother's maiden name was Agan.
  • Santiago Arcala dies in Tacoma, Washington on July 2, 1925 and his parents were listed as Bartolome Arcala and Narcisa Arribas.
